On Thursday 6th of February 2020 at the Belgian Beer Bar, the Front End Dev Adl team (Shane Smith, Dan Harris and Matt Pigram) are hosting an evening of Lightning Talks. These consist of bite-sized presentations of around 10 minutes each, all on developer-related topics. It's a new format for the event and one the team is excited about!
I took the opportunity to secure an interview each of the presenters ; below is the final in the series of 5 leading up to the February event.
For those who don't know you yet, can you tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Thais, from Brazil but currently working and living in Adelaide with my husband and my little smart child Olivia.
I have about 11 years of experience with development in general, past experience with .Net (Desktop, Web and Windows Mobile...)
Android developer with about 7 years of experience. I worked 5 years at Magazine Luiza (https://www.magazineluiza.com.br/) ecommerce app in Brazil (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.luizalabs.mlapp).
I am currently Tech Lead of a mobile team at MyBudget in Adelaide. We are starting a new app and chose Flutter, because we can advance the app on both platforms evolving the same codebase. Really enjoying this experience with Flutter :)
I am organizer of GDG Adelaide https://www.meetup.com/en-AU/GDG-Adelaide/
Happy to see so many developers in Adelaide joining and attending our events for sharing knowledge and learning with each others experience.
Sometimes I have time to share some knowledge and findings in Medium:
What is the title of your talk?
“Adding Flutter to an existing Android App”
What is it about?
Is about one awaited feature that was released in the latest version of Flutter 1.12, announced in the Flutter Interact event on 11 December last year. That gives the possibility to add Flutter to your existing app. I will go through how you can integrate Flutter using the Add To App feature and its benefits and limitations.
If you could wave a magic wand and change one thing to improve the life of software developers, what would it be?
Software Development should be taken serious just like building constructions. Not just delivery a software that works, but deliver with quality and able to evolve at the same pace as business and technology changes require. If I could have some more magic, would wish a more inclusive environment as well.
Can you describe the Adelaide tech scene in 5 words or less?
From an outside perspective, since I am new in Adelaide... I always heard about technology in Sydney and Melbourne mainly. Discover technology people here in Adelaide has being amazing. So many business growing and changing there mindset to grow in Tech industry is a really good experience.
(sorry, but had to use more than 5 words 🙂 )
Can you make a case that front end developers are more valuable than back end developers?
I disagree with that. I believe each part of the ecosystem has value and they need each other to produce value for the business. Frontend, backend, design, UX, business, QA, support... all of them are important and valued.
How would your family describe what you do for work?
She is a nerd that loves her works and I can install them in my phone 😊
She fix mobile phones problems 😄
What is one question I should have asked to make this an even more interesting interview?
How many times people say I have a great idea, let's build an app like...? I can't count them 😅
Thais will be presenting at the Frontend Dev Adl on Thursday 6th of February 2020 along with Michael Timbs, Ollie Boermans, Josh Young and Darragh Kearns.
