MEET THE PRESENTERS : FEATURING DARRAGH KEARNS
Updated: Jan 29
On Thursday 6th of February 2020 at the Belgian Beer Bar, the Front End Dev Adl team (Shane Smith, Dan Harris and Matt Pigram) are hosting an evening of Lightning Talks. These consist of bite-sized presentations of around 10 minutes each, all on developer-related topics. It's a new format for the event and one the team is excited about!
I took the opportunity to interview each of the presenters ; below is one in a series of five conversations that will be released in the lead up to the event.
Darragh is an Irish/Australian who recently scored his first goal in indoor soccer.
This has absolutely nothing to do with his talk.......but he was keen for as many people as possible to know about it.
What is the title of your talk?
“Navigating the minefield when integrating react native and flutter.”
What is it about?
How to integrate Flutter into React-Native and why our team did it.
At Pickstar we had a React Native app – and heard good things about Flutter but didn’t have the time for a full migration.
We were curious, so we built one of our views in it – it worked well – so we thought, let’s see if we can get Flutter inside React Native. We did, and it somehow works really well. It is now working in production on a live app.
Who will benefit the most from coming to this talk?
Anyone who is considering doing Flutter. You CAN do a part migration and not everything at once – and some of these ideas also apply to other technologies.
How did your team hear about Flutter?
We had a developer on the team who loved it. He was using it on his own stuff and kept raving about it.
I think the decision was also born out of some frustrations we were having with the performance of our existing applications - and we needed to innovate.
What is Flutter?
Flutter is a mobile app framework – it allows you to build one app that can be compiled on Android or iOS.
Flutter is the new kid on the block via Google.
What percentage of Pickstar's customers use iOS versus android?
80-90% of our customers use iOS
Only exceptions are perhaps those whose sporting teams are sponsored by Samsung and other providers.
If you could wave a magic wand and change one thing to improve the life of software developers, what would it be?
Getting rid of Internet Explorer! Catering to it is a nightmare. CSS grid would be nice, and not having to look are weird errors and maintain support.
Can you describe the Adelaide tech scene in 5 words or less?
Growing and growing fast!
Can you make a case that front end developers are more valuable than back end developers?
I’m a full stack dev who leans to the backend.
I can make a case an awesome query that compiles in a millionth of a second BUT a front end dev can make a button that flashes – and that is what everyone is excited about.
How would your family describe what you do for work?
My family is pretty with it with tech. They say I build websites.
What is one question I should have asked to make this an even more interesting interview?
I'd like you to ask how did we go in our last futsal game.
I want as many people as possible that I scored this week.
10th match – 1st goal!
Thanks Darragh – they will now!
Darragh will be presenting at the Front End Dev Adl on Thursday 6th of February 2020 along with Michael Timbs, Ollie Boermans, Josh Young and Thais Aquino.
